The most beautiful tent and camping sites in the Harz Mountains

We don't need to tell you that the Harz is one of the most beautiful and popular camping regions in Germany. On one hand, you can go camping here all year round, and on the other hand, pure nature awaits you. With us, you will find the most beautiful private pitches for your vacation in the Harz National Park and around the Brocken. Head into the forests and to the lakes with hinterland.camp. We have tamed wild camping for you!

Nature camping in the Harz - Where forest camping truly lives up to its name.

In the Harz, you'll find Quedlinburg, a city that is over 1.000 years old and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its old streets and historic town center. It's a must-visit place on your travel itinerary, just like Goslar. Well, that might not be directly related to nature camping, but we couldn't leave out this highlight in the Harz.

Impressive nature with rocks and untouched forests awaits you in the Bodetal and its surroundings. Here, you can immerse yourself deep into the Harz and set out for hiking, climbing, mountain biking, or bushcrafting from your private campsite.

If you're more into water, you'll also be happy in the Harz, as there are many artificially created lakes for freshwater supply. The largest of these reservoirs can be found in the eastern Harz, at the Rappbodetalsperre.

Our tip for adrenaline junkies: Book a session of wall running to run up or down the over 100-meter-high dam, secured by a rope. Equally thrilling is walking over the 460-meter-long suspension bridge "Titan RT," which hovers over the reservoir at over 100 meters high.

The Brocken, at 1.141 meters, is the center of the Harz. You can take it easy and ride up with the small train or take a more athletic approach and hike to the summit. But beware: even in spring or autumn, it can get pretty cold up there. Always check the weather before heading to the Brocken.

Our excursion tip: The Feuersteinklippe (Flint Cliff). These impressive rock formations made of slate and other rocks are the perfect backdrop for your next trail.

Team-Hinterland insider tip from Oli:

"We were on the so-called 'Hamburger Wappen' (Hamburg Crest) early in the morning, which is part of the Teufelsmauer (Devil's Wall). I will never forget these bizarre rock formations in the morning light and complete silence."

Your camper van parking space from private hosts in the Harz - almost like staying at friends place

We offer you the opportunity to experience camping in the Harz in a completely different way. Our hosts provide you with a piece of meadow on their property or a camper pitch in the woods, by the lake, or in the garden. You don't have to share your spot with hundreds of other campers; instead, you can enjoy nature all by yourself, with friends, children, and family. Instead of impersonal contact, camping with hinterland.camp feels like being with friends. This makes camping in the Harz a genuine, warm-hearted, and authentic experience, without garden gnome charm, and always in a perfect location.

Camping in the Harz Mountains by the lake - water, nature, freedom

The Harz has a more than 200-year-old hiking tradition. Here, you will find hiking trails that were explored by Heinrich Heine and other German Romantics many dozens of years ago. Today, you can benefit from a large network of signposted hiking trails around the Brocken and Braunlage. There are true "classics" like the Hexensteig near Osterrode or the so-called "Liebesbankweg" (Love Bench Trail).

However, in the Harz, you can also create your own trails for running or go camping for bushcrafting. Bouldering or climbing is also possible in the rock formations.

If you prefer to explore the Harz on two wheels while camping, there are plenty of bike paths for leisurely cruising, such as the Innerste-Radweg (Innerste River Cycle Path). Many of these routes run along streams or rivers in the Harz. However, the hilly landscape is much too challenging to resist getting on a mountain bike or trail bike!

Our tip: On the rivers Oker, Innerste, and Bode, you can go kayaking or rafting. This is particularly action-packed in the spring after the snowmelt. Look for a camping site near these rivers on hinterland.camp to have easy access to the starting points.

Where can find child-friendly camping sites in the Harz Mountains?

Whether at the Okertalsperre, the Brocken, Kreuzeck, or in Braunlage, the Harz is suitable for camping with children everywhere. Wherever you park your camper or set up your tent, nature is never far away. Additionally, there are many places you can visit, especially for families with children:

  • Climbing forest in Thale
