Camping in the Black Forest

The most beautiful spots in the Black Forest away from crowded campsites

The Black Forest is more than just Bollenhüte and fir trees - and of course the region offers more than crowded standard campsites. Simply use our spots from private hosts, pitch your camper or tent in the countryside and enjoy nature from day one. With hinterland.camp you can experience one of Germany's most popular vacation regions in all its facets, from wildly romantic to mystically dark, from fragrant orchards to clear lakes.

Why nature camping and the Black Forest are a perfect match

Even though the Black Forest is a well-known region in Germany, many people are not aware of its incredible diversity. If you come from the north, you can explore the Northern Black Forest from the Rhine Valley. Camping in the Kinzig Valley is perfect in this area. Camping in the Northern Black Forest offers a unique atmosphere, especially in the morning when the dark fir forests are shrouded in mist, creating an almost mystical ambiance. Enchanting lakes like Lake Mummelsee and majestic mountains like Hornisgrinde contribute to this atmosphere. Despite being a cultural forest, you might find yourself hiking through nature without encountering anyone, for example, in the forests around Hornisgrinde in the Northern Black Forest or early in the morning on Feldberg. It's nature camping at its finest, as you can start your adventure directly from your camping spot with our hosts.

Heading east, you can venture into the Swabian Alb, where a completely different natural landscape awaits you. It's hilly but rugged and very authentic. Perfect for mountain bike tours or long hikes, trails, or bushcrafting.

For a more "gentle" experience, head to the Southern Black Forest. Here, the area around Freiburg, also known as the "Gateway to the Southern Black Forest," is particularly inviting. In the broad valleys like Münstertal or Glottertal, you'll find a beautiful mix of deciduous and fir forests, streams, orchards, and meadows with cows. Our tent and pitch spots here are perfect starting points for longer tours over the mountains. With the Belchen, Feldberg, or Schauinsland, there are certainly some peaks waiting for you. It's also a good idea to start your tour early to enjoy nature peacefully and not share it with hordes of tourists ☺

If you're drawn to water while camping in the Black Forest, you should look for a host near Schluchsee or Titisee. There, you can swim and bathe in crystal-clear, fresh water or try your hand at surfing or stand-up paddling (SUP). The best part is that you're surrounded by nature everywhere you go.

Recommendation: Since you're already in the south, you should make a detour to Kaiserstuhl. This small volcanic hill in the Rhine Valley is one of the warmest regions in Germany. Here, you can, for example, enjoy a wine tasting at one of the many wineries or explore the unique natural landscape of this region. At Kaiserstuhl, you'll find many native orchid species and rare lizards in abundance.

Team Hinterland Insider Tip from Oli:
"If you're out and about in the northern Black Forest, you should definitely take advantage of the first early morning hours. I was in the Black Forest for the first time myself in 2019 and immediately fascinated by this almost unreal atmosphere in the forest. Even though getting up at 5:00 a.m. on vacation hurt at first, the nature experience so made up for it afterwards."

Camping with a dog in the Black Forest: Where four-legged friends feel right at home

If you want to go camping with your dog in the Black Forest, you are in the right place with hinterland.camp. Unlike large campsites, most of our hosts allow dogs. Your furry companions can have a blast running around on meadows, splashing in streams or lakes, and exploring through the forests during hikes. That's why we don't have a specific recommendation here. In the Black Forest, you have so much nature around you that almost every destination with us is perfect for dogs. Our practical tips for individual winter camping in the Black Forest

If you enjoy skiing, cross-country skiing, or snowboarding, then the Black Forest is a perfect destination for you, your friends, and your family. The region around the Feldberg is a true winter sports area. From your pitch at one of our hosts, you'll quickly find the nearest cross-country skiing track or slope.

When you choose camping with Hinterland, you opt for the individual variant. This means that tent and camping spot locations may require more flexibility from you or your group. You should be prepared, for example, that there might be no Wi-Fi or power connection available. Showers or cooking facilities, as found on typical campsites, are also less common with us. In general, for winter camping, the more self-sufficient you are with your camper or motorhome, the better.

Tip: Simply select the "wintersport" filter on Hinterland if you want to go winter camping in the Black Forest. This way, you'll see the best places for winter camping in the Black Forest.

Camping on the farm in the Black Forest - lush meadows and you right in the middle of it

In the morning the rooster crows, during the day cows moo, and in between cats meow, sheep bleat and the air is filled with the scent of nature? Then you have probably chosen to camp on a farm in the Black Forest with hinterland.camp. There is hardly a better way to experience rural life up close than on a campsite on a farm.

Especially the region around Freiburg, above the Münstertal, is rich in mountain meadows and farms. Here, you can combine a farm vacation with nature camping and plenty of outdoor activities in the fresh air.

Is wild camping allowed in the Black Forest?

As in all of Germany, wild camping is not allowed in the Black Forest. Here there is no so-called "Everyman's Right" as for example in Sweden, which allows wild camping. You therefore always have to ask the owners of the land in Germany if you are allowed to camp on their property.

The good news: On hinterland.camp you can find real and legal sites in solitary locations, so you can confidently do without wild camping in the Black Forest - and still camp in the middle of nature.
