Too cold? Too wet? Too gray? There are many reasons why camping in autumn is rather a no-go for many. We from the Hinterland team think that it is especially beautiful in the Hinterland right now, when the sun is shining even more golden or cloudy fog is drifting over the landscape! Not convinced yet? Then here are our four top reasons why you shouldn't miss out on camping in autumn, where you can best spend the golden season in the Hinterland and what tricks will make it really cozy:

1.) The best culinary treasures are waiting!

With the start of autumn, it's harvest time on farms and orchards in the hinterland! Crisp fruit is now hanging on the trees (read more in our story [Late Summer in the Hinterland: Off to the Fruit Harvest! ]()) and ripe vegetables are waiting to be harvested in the fields. But even away from farms and cultivated fields, it's worth looking for fresh produce for the table. So get out into the woods and look down - there are some very special treasures waiting for you now: mushrooms in all shapes and colors! What do you need to pick mushrooms? Basically only a basket, a knife and a good mushroom identification book. For beginners it is recommended to take a course or to go with an expert. For all collectors: Only harvest what you can identify one hundred percent and what you can use afterwards. In addition, always make sure that the mushrooms are cut cleanly or twisted out and not simply torn off. And sometimes it is enough just to look at the colorful parts!

For more information and details on mushroom picking and identification, we are big fans of the YouTube channel Buschfunkistan and the Instagram account [@intothewoods_mushrooms ]() by "Pilzfluencer" Simon (photo above). There's a lot of expertise on both, packaged in a delightfully entertaining way. Also highly recommended is the [mushroom podcast ]() with interesting, bizarre and interesting facts from the realm of mushrooms. And here are suitable backcountry spots in or near the forest, where you can go on a "mushroom hunt":

2.) It's time for bonfires!

In summer, the rule in many places is: campfires are forbidden! And for good reason. Because the earth is so dry, any spark, however small, or failure to extinguish the fire properly can cause an uncontrolled fire or even forest fire. But even in the fall, be careful when building a fire and be diligent in your preparation: - Always build your fireplace at a sufficient distance from branches or other flammable materials in the surrounding area, as well as the camper or tent. - Make sure to surround the fireplace with stones or use a suitable fire bowl/barrel directly - It is best to use seasoned and, above all, dry wood to start the fire.

By the way, a campfire is not only for warming or browning marshmallows - try cooking directly over the flames! For beginners, we recommend [this YouTube video ](), which presents suitable outdoor cooking equipment, as well as the [Instagram channel of Petromax ]() for culinary inspiration. And here are some suitable backcountry spots with campfire pits - often our hosts also offer firewood directly:

3.) The hotspots are no longer so crowded!

Another plus point in autumn: everything is a bit quieter than in summer and even the most popular tourist destinations are no longer so crowded. So you can explore beautiful places and destinations in a relaxed way and maybe even be lucky enough to have some hotspots to yourself. Here are four of our favorite regions for camping in the fall plus tips for excursions - and we'll link you to the appropriate campsites in the regions right away:

- The[Harz: ]()Impressive nature with rocks and natural forests await you in the Bode Valley and its surroundings. Here you can dive deep into the Harz mountains and go hiking, climbing, mountain biking or bushcrafting. But also the over 1,000 year old city of Quedlinburg with its old alleys and the old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, should definitely be on your itinerary. The Brocken with its 1,141 meters is the center of the Harz Mountains. You can take it easy and go up with the little train or you can take it sporty and hike to the top. - [The island of Rügen: ]()**¨NBSP; **This island is more than cliffs and chalk cliffs! Many do not know how great you can go hiking here. We can especially recommend the Hochuferweg from Lohme to Sassnitz. Maybe you'll be lucky and see a white-tailed eagle circling in the Jasmund National Park!

- [The Allgäu: ]() Here, of course, we especially love the crystal clear lakes! We recommend, for example, the Alpsee near Immenstadt. It is the largest natural lake in the Allgäu. A highlight of your hiking tour could also be the Schrecksee at Hinterstein. It is one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in the vacation region. Almost mystical is the Chrislessee near Oberstdorf. - [The Black Forest: ]() especially in the morning hours, the dark fir forests with clouds of mist are almost mystical. Legendary lakes like the Mummelsee or mountains like the Hornisgrinde in the north of the Black Forest add to this atmosphere. Heading east, you can head for the Schwäbisch Alb. Here, a completely different natural landscape awaits you. Hilly, but still rather rough and very primitive. Perfect for mountain bike tours or long hikes, trails or bushcrafting.

4.) There is also a lot going on with the animals!

In the hinterland, fox and hare not only say good night to each other proverbially all year round. But especially in autumn, a few places entice with very special animal encounters. For example, a stay in the [Bavarian Forest Deer Park ]() (photos below) promises pure goose bumps: You here spend the night together with about 200 animals from different deer packs and can experience the deer rut up close. Because just in time for the beginning of autumn, the deer also go there to look for a mate and their roaring often resounds for kilometers over meadows, forests and valleys.

Bird lovers, too, can now get their money's worth on a [site at Lake Galenbeck ](), for example.¨NBSP; are in their element. Here you can camp with a view of the nature reserve - from October to November, thousands of cranes, wild geese and swans migrate from here to their winter quarters. A dream come true for all camping-enthusiastic ornithologists! Here come more beastly good sites for beastly good camping in autumn in the hinterland:
