Living in a camper in sub-zero temperatures: 5 must-haves.

Now let's get down to business. For a relaxing time in the camper, even in sub-zero temperatures, you should think about the right equipment beforehand. We have compiled 5 must-haves for you that will keep your feet warm.

1. Basics: Hot Water Bottle & Wool Blanket

Not surprisingly, hot water bottles and wool blankets are an absolute must-have for the cold season. The only hurdle: You have to remember to pack them. :)

2. De-icing Spray for Windows and Locks

Absolute lifesavers are de-icing sprays for the windshield or the door lock. If you don't feel like spending hours scraping the windshield, you can simply spray this miracle solution on the glass and have a clear view within seconds. Equally easy, you can de-ice door locks with special sprays if they happen to freeze."

3. Parking Heater or Space Heater

If even the hot water bottle is no longer sufficient, you can consider a parking heater or a space heater. When choosing a parking heater, there are various options to consider, depending on what suits you and your vehicle. If you want to learn more about the topic, you can, for example, check out the article on the 5 different types of heaters in campers by Vanlust.

If something smaller is needed, a space heater might suffice. There are special models designed for cars with a 12V connection, such as this one from COMBLU.

4. Dehumidifier Cushions

One of the biggest challenges when camping in winter is often not the cold but the high humidity. Especially when ski clothes are involved, you should consider little helpers like dehumidifier cushions. They absorb moisture and ensure that the air feels warmer.

5. Hooks for Hanging Wet Clothes

Another issue is wet clothes. When you come inside the camper from the snow, you just want to get rid of them, but where to put them? To avoid wet seats, you can attach hooks, preferably with a small drip tray, where you can hang and let the clothes dry.

Driving in Snow & Ice: What Do You Need to Consider?

Driving in icy and snowy conditions is crucial for a relaxed camping vacation in sub-zero temperatures. Therefore, we have some tips for you to ensure you arrive safely at your campsite and can fully enjoy your excursion into the winter wonderland.

1. Winter Tires

The right tires make a huge difference. Always drive on icy roads with winter tires for better traction.

2. Snow Chains

When roads are icy or covered in snow, even winter tires may not provide sufficient traction. It's advisable to have snow chains with you. The sharp edges of the chains dig into the ice or snow, providing more grip while driving.

3. Tire Pressure

The tire pressure of your vehicle should be approximately 0.2 bar above the value specified by the manufacturer. This allows the tire tread to open up, providing more grip on the road.

4. Braking Distance

Keep in mind that the braking distance on slippery, icy, or snowy roads significantly increases. It's crucial to maintain a safe distance from other cars and potential hazards and to drive slowly.

5. Driving Style

Driving at low RPMs can help you achieve better traction on slippery roads. If you have a manual transmission, you can start in second gear and use higher gears during the drive. To get a feel for your vehicle's behavior and the weather conditions, you can occasionally perform brake tests.

While driving, it's most important to stay calm and avoid abrupt steering or braking to prevent skidding.

Drive steadily, slowly, and with control, and you'll be on the safe side!
