Our favorite place is located on the enchanted grounds of the old paper mill in Neu Kaliss.
Located directly on the River Elde, a branch of the Elbe, you can stroll through the charming lost place, visit the exhibition about the history, go kayaking towards the old mill or to Dömitz in the nature reserve. You can also go fishing or cycle along the Elbe cycle path.
If you're expecting pitches or a traditional campsite feeling, you won't find it here.
Instead, you will find industrial culture, lost place charm and wild nature all the more!
This is a unique, unspoiled place to spend a few relaxing days away from the big city. The old brick buildings are home to falcons, storks and kites, the fields are home to deer and in the morning you are woken up by sheep or free-range chickens.
The sunset terrace on the island with its Hollywood swing and comfortable garden furniture invites you to linger and in the evening there is often a fire or a spontaneous movie on the big screen.
Among other things, the Kontorhaus is located on the site, where various creative projects are currently being developed and an exhibition on the history of the Fabri is housed. On the island, you can also explore the grounds of the old paper factory with all its enchanted corners and let your gaze wander over the fields as the sun sets.

We (a married couple in our mid-50s and two medium-sized dogs) unfortunately only spent one night at this very special site, but we could have stayed there for weeks. It’s the perfect “lost place.” You can tell by looking at the old paper mill that it’s been more or less empty for years, and yet there are still many little nooks with old furniture and new works of art. And all of this is spread across many different buildings, most of which are accessible. It’s a huge adventure playground for kids, but adults can “play” here, too! We were greeted by the absolutely adorable Thilo, a big Bernese Mountain Dog, and his tiny friend Lüttjen—and, of course, Günter was there as well and gave us a warm welcome. The restrooms, of course, reminded me—as someone from the East—of my childhood, but everything was clean and well-maintained. We had actually just planned to spend the night there, but we ended up exploring the grounds and even got to cuddle Salt and Pepper, two miniature pigs. As soon as we travel to the Baltic Sea or the Mecklenburg Lake District again, we’ll definitely stop here once more. But you could easily spend a whole week here and probably still wouldn’t have seen everything. By the way, there’s also water and boats, but we didn’t end up getting around to that… Thank you so much, and continued success with this life’s work!
It was very interesting to be there, especially because of the Victoria, which no longer exists. Sunny regards, Thomas
I can only agree with the other reviews: it’s a truly special place. Unfortunately, we only had time for one night’s stay, but we found it very interesting to get a brief glimpse into the history of the paper mill. The amenities and comfort were perfect. We had a very peaceful night. Thank you very much, and all the best for the project! Dorothee & Frank
We had a wonderful stay with Günter during our stopover. It was interesting to explore the old paper mill. We'd love to come back.
A fascinating place, wonderful people. I stayed there for three nights with my dog, and it certainly won’t be the last time. I was lucky enough to meet Günter in person. On the last night, we were completely alone—which, in this kind of “lost place,” is both spooky and amazing. We had everything we needed. I also met nothing but friendly, interesting people in the area. We’ll definitely be back. Thank you so much for sharing such a wonderful, historic place with others.
